Thespira is a network and platform dedicated to the representation, promotion, and distribution of contemporary performing arts productions, based in Thessaloniki. It operates as a program of the Social Cooperative Enterprise Syn-Koino, an organization with many years of experience in cultural production, education, and the organization of cultural events in Greece and abroad.
Thespira focuses on performance practices based on live presence, movement, and the use of objects. Its artistic scope includes puppet theater, contemporary circus, physical theater, as well as hybrid or interdisciplinary forms. It supports adaptable and mobile projects, designed to be presented in different venues and to appeal to diverse audiences.
The platform serves as a meeting point for artists, performing arts groups, festivals, schools, municipalities, and cultural organizations, facilitating collaborations and exchanges across the entire performing arts ecosystem. Through these connections, Thespira enhances the mobility of performances in Greece and internationally, expanding opportunities for their presentation in new artistic and geographical contexts.
Beyond artistic curation, Thespira serves as a support structure for artists and producers, handling the organizational and practical needs that accompany the presentation of a performance. This includes coordination and scheduling, agreements and administrative procedures, financial management, as well as transportation and accommodation. In this way, Thespira allows artists to focus on creation, while the organization and presentation of the performance are supported with consistency and professionalism.
At the core of Thespira’s philosophy lies the idea of the spiral, as well as the figure of Thespis, the first actor.
The spiral symbolizes continuous movement, openness, and transformation through journey and encounter. The performances presented by Thespira are treated as living experiences that evolve through their movement and contact with different contexts and audiences. Drawing on fundamental tools of the performing arts—such as puppet theater, circus, and physical presence—Thespira advocates for art as a collective practice based on collaboration, trust, and exchange.
Thespira contributes to the development of a sustainable and interconnected performing arts landscape by combining artistic vision with organizational expertise and fostering long-term relationships among creators, institutions, and communities.
